Momentum and Energy Vocabulary Flashcards
Work
the product of the magnitude of displacement parallel to the displacement or the transfer of energy from one physical system to another
energy
the ability to do work or the property of objects which can be transferred to other objects or converted into different forms
kinetic energy
the energy that an object possesses due to its motion
elastic potential energy
the energy stored in elastic materials as the result of their stretching or compressing
gravitational potential energy
the energy stored in an object due to its vertical position or height
dissipated energy
energy which becomes unavailable and irrecoverable to a system
elastic collision
a collision between two objects in which kinetic energy is conserved
mechanical energy
the sum of the potential and kinetic energy in a system
Hooke’s Law
a principle that states that the force needed to extend or compress a spring by some distance is proportional to that distance
power
the rate at which work is done or the rate at which energy is converted from one form to another
restoring force
any force that tends to restore a system to equilibrium after an initial displacement
conservative forces
any force whose work is determined only by the final displacement of the object acted upon
