Dynamics Vocabulary Flashcards
Dynamics
The branch of mechanics concerned with the motion of bodies under the action of forces
Force
Any action that, when unopposed, will change the motion of an object.
Free Body Diagram
A pictorial device used to analyze the forces acting on a body. Sometimes referred to as a force diagram.
Strong Nuclear Force
The force which binds the protons and neutrons together in an atomic nuclei.
Weak Nuclear Force
A force between elementary particles that causes certain processes that take place with low probability, such as radioactive decay.
Electromagnetic Force
The force resulting from the interaction of charged particles and their electric and magnetic fields.
Gravitational Force
The force of attraction that all objects with mass have for each other.
Friction
A physical force that resists the relative motion or tendency to such motion of two bodies in contact.
Tension
A pulling force exerted by each end of a string, cable, chain, or similar one-dimensional continuous object.
Normal Force
The component of a contact force between two objects that is perpendicular to the surface.
Inertia
A property of matter by which it continues in its existing state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless changed by an external force.
Centripetal Force
A force that is directed towards the center of a curved path.
Orbital Motion
The motion of an object around a fixed point.
Net Force
The overall force acting on an object.
System
A set of connected things or parts forming a complex whole.
