Momentum Flashcards
What is momentum!?
A quantity relating to a moving object that is calculated by multiplying its mass by its velocity.
What is momentum a product of!?
Mass and velocity
What is mass!?
The amount of matter an object contains. Mass is measured in kilograms (kg) or grams (g).
Is momentum a scalar or a vector!?
It is a vector quantity
What is the calculation for momentum!?
Momentum= mass x velocity
P=mv
What is momentum measured in!?
Kgm/s
What is a closed system!?
If the object cannot be affected or affect anything outside of it.
What is it called when 2 objects collide in a closed system!?
Conservation of momentum
What is the equation for conservation of momentum!?
Total momentum before an event = total momentum after an event
What is conservation of momentum!?
The principle that the total momentum of a system remains the same. When bodies collide, whatever momentum is lost by one body, the other gains in equal amounts.
What is a change in momentum!?
When a resultant force acts on an object that is moving, or able to move, there is a change in momentum.
How do you calculate the rate of change of momentum!?
Force= mass x change in velocity/time take = change in momentum/time taken
What does the calculation for change in momentum show!?
It shows that the force involved is equal to the rate of change of momentum
What is rate of change!?
The amount of change in the size of a quantity each second.
Name the car safety features…..
seatbelts, airbags and crumple zones
What do all the car safety Features do!?
all work to change the shape of the car, which increases the time taken for the collision.
What are crumple zones!?
Crumple zones refer to the areas of a car that are designed to deform or crumple on impact.
What do these car safety features do in terms of momentum!?
These different safety features decrease the rate of change of momentum, which decreases the force of the collision on any people within the car.
