Momentum Flashcards
Define momentum and symbol?
The momentum of a moving object is the product of its mass and velocity.
The symbol is p.
What quantity is momentum?
Momentum is a vector quantity.
What are the units of momentum?
The units are kgm/s or Ns
What is the formula for momentum?
momentum=mass x velocity
p=mv
How do you convert m/s to km/h?
Take the unit and divide by 3.6.
State the principle of conservation.
When two or more bodies act on one another, as in a collision, the total momentum of the bodies remains constant, provided that no external force act.
What are the two types of collisions
- Elastic collisions: When there is conservation of both the momentum and kinetic energy of
colliding bodies. These type of collisions do not exist in real life as energy is
always lost in the form of sound, heat, light or deformation of objects when
bodies collide. - Inelastic collisions: When there is only conservation of momentum but not kinetic energy.
Name and explain 2 examples of how momentum is applied.
- Explosions
Momentum is conserved in explosions, like a fired riffle. Momentum is 0 as riffle and bullet
receive equal and opposite forces. - Rockets and jets
A high velocity steam of hot gas produced by burning fuel leaving exhaust with large
momentum. Jets use surrounding air, rockets use oxygen supply.
State formula for equal momentum.
Momentum of bullet = momentum of riffle
m x v = m x v
(m x v)/m = v
X m/s = v
Use principle of conservation to calculate momentum.
total momentum before collision = total momentum after collision
mv + mv = mv +mv
1Ap + 1Bp = 2Ap + 2Bp
What do you do if momentum is a negative number.
The quantity is written as X due West.
