Momentum Flashcards
Conservation of momentum (theory)
An isolated system is free from the influence of a net external force that alters the momentum of the system.
Law of conservation of momentum
The total linear momentum of an isolated system remains constant
What is impulse
Impulse is the product of the net force and the contact time
Describe the relationship between impulse and CHANGE in momentum
Impulse and change in momentum are equivalent
What is an inelastic collision
Ek is not conserved, as it is transferred into heat or light energy in a collision
What is an elastic collision
Ek is conserved
What is Newton’s 2nd law in terms of momentum
The net force acting on an object is equal to the rate of change of momentum of the object in the direction of the net force
