Forces Flashcards
What is a resultant force/vector
A vector that can replace all other vectors that act on an object. It shows the combined effect of all the other vectors acting on the object.
What are the components of vectors
Vectors that together have the same effect as the original vector.
What is a net force
The combined effect of all the forces acting on an object.
What is normal force
Force exerted by a surface on an object in contact with it (always perpendicular to the surface)
What is weight force/gravitational force
The gravitational attraction that pulls an object towards the earth
What two forces are exerted by a surface on an object
Frictional force and normal force
What is frictional force
Force that opposes the motion of an object in contact with a surface. It acts parallel to the surface.
What 3 types of friction is friction measured in
Static friction, maximum static friction and kinetic friction
What is static friction (fs)
Frictional force when an object is standing still on a surface. For a stationary object, static friction equals applied force and increases as applied force increases.
What is maximum static friction (fsmax)
The static friction just before an object starts to move
What is kinetic friction (Fk)
The frictional force when an object moves or slides over a surface. When an object moves, Fk is constant.
What is the coefficient of static friction
(Ms) is the ratio of fsmax/N
What is the coefficient of friction
M
Is the frictional force less/more than the max static friction for a body at rest
Less (fs<MsN)
What is the coefficient of kinetic friction
(Mk) Kinetic friction depends on the nature of the surfaces
