Momentum Flashcards
Newtons first law
An object will remain at rest or continue to travel with constant velocity unless acted on by a resultant force
newtons second law
the net force acting on an object is directly proportional to the change of momentum and is acting in the same direction
Newtons third law
when two objects interact they exert opposite but equal forces on one another
What is the area under a force time graph
it is the impulse over that time duration which is equal to the change of momentum
What is the principle of the conservation of momentum
for a system of interacting objects, the total momentum in a specified direction remains constant, as long as no external forces act on the system.
What is conserved in a perfectly elastic collision
total kinetic energy is conserved
momentum is conserved
what is lost in an inelastic collision
total kinetic energy is not conserved
