Momentum Flashcards
Linear momentum definition
the linear momentum of a body is the product of its mass and velocity
Linear momentum formula,
in words
in symbols
momentum = mass x velocity
p = mv
Closed system definition
a system of interacting objects in which there are no external forces
Conservation of momentum definition
the sum or total momentum of the bodies in a closed system is constant provided no resultant force acts
Perfectly elastic collision definition
in a perfectly elastic collision, the total kinetic energy of all the bodies remains constant
Inelastic collision
in an inelastic collision, kinetic energy is not conserved some is transferred to other forms such as heat
Key idea of perfectly elastic collisions
in a perfectly elastic collision of 2 bodies, the relative speed of the body’s approach is equal to the relative speed of their seperation
Key idea of inelastic collisions
during an inelastic collision, the total kinetic energy of the bodies become smaller
Resultant force equation,
in words
in symbols
Resultant force is proportional to rate of change of momentum
F = ∆p / ∆t
