Moments Flashcards
What do force multipliers do
Reduce the effort needed to move the load by increasing the distance over which it is acting
Moment definition
The force multiplied by the perpendicular distance from the line of action of the force to the axis of rotation
What are moments measured in
Nm
Why are moments scalar quantities
Have a direction - mostly up or down
Principle of moments
If an object is in balance, the sum of the anticlockwise moments = the sum of the clockwise moments
The centre of mass/gravity simple definition
A point where all the weight of an object appears to act
Centre of mass/gravity explanation
The weight force acts at this point, so if we support the object at this point there is no turning moment in any direction about the point, and it balances
To find The centre of mass of a symmetrical body
Where the axes of symmetry cross
If something is unstable, it has a moment that will make it topple over. When/why would this occur?
If the centre of mass of an object moves so that the line of action of the weight is outside the base of the object
Factors that make an object more stable
- wider base
- lower centre of mass
