Moments Flashcards
What is the principle of moments
If an object is balanced, the total CWM about a pivot equals the total ACWM about that pivot
What is the centre of gravity
The point through which the weight of an object acts
In an object of uniform density, where is the centre of gravity
It’s located at the point of symmetry
In an object of irregular density how is the centre of gravity located?
By locating its balance point
What is required for an object to be stable?
a wide base
a low centre of gravity
Why do objects topple over?
When centre of gravity is outside the object base and the object topples over.
What is newtons 3rd law of motion?
whenever two objects interact, they exert equal and opposite forces on each other.
What is a moment
The turning effect of a force about a pivot
why, for example, the door handle is placed on the opposite side to the hinge
This means for a given force, the perpendicular distance from the pivot (the hinge) is larger
This creates a larger moment (turning effect) to make it easier to open the door
