In this flashback scene, during WW2, In Act 2, Billy and Robert, Billy’s friend who is also a soldier, meet an Italian family who welcome the two to spend the evening with them. They eat and dance with each other and Billy meets Lucia, a girl who he has fallen for.

line - Sam Donavan says, “come on let’s dance!”
tone - is cheerful and confident which conveys Robert as extroverted
pitch - slightly higher than usual shows Robert is youthful and spontaneous
volume - louder shows he is confident
pace - quicker shows Robbo is excited to dance
body language and gesture
body language - Sam Donavan’s posture is upright and his head is held high shows Robert is self-assured and charismatic
gestures - exaggerated shows he is joyful and eggar to dance with Lucia’s mother
body language - Dudley Sutton’s body language is the opposite to Sam Donavan’s - slumped posture/tends to look down conveys that Billy feels nervous around Lucia as he likes her

Dudley Sutton maintains steady eye contact when Billy and Lucia are looking at each other shows the characters are sharing an intimate moment
his eyes are also wide showing he is in awe of Lucia/ mesmerised by her

pace - Sutton moves at a slow pace when Billy is dancing with Lucia shows the two are sharing an intimate moment
Sam Donavan is dancing at a faster pace shows Robert is livelier and more extroverted as compared to Billy
movement - Sam Donavan moves a lot from right stage to left stage during the dance creating a comedic aspect for the audience
positioning - Dudley Sutton is situated downstage centre during the dance which puts the focus on Billy and Lucia’s dance
EVALUATION - what was successful about this moment?
Sutton and Donavan’s movement and gestures were successful in showing the difference in confidence levels between billy and Robbie.

Donavan’s fast pace movement across the stage, whilst Robbo dancing - creates a comedic aspect for the audience
Sutton’s use of eye contact, shows Billy’s attraction towards Lucia.
this successfully communicates a good relationship between soldiers and the Italian family

The audience finds the relationship between Robert and Lucia’s mum endearing and comedic due to the way they dance together
