Moles in Solutions Flashcards
What is the meaning of the solvent?
The solvent is the liquid in which a solute is dissolved to form a solution
What is the meaning of the solute?
The solute is the minor component in a solution, dissolved in the solvent
What is the meaning of the solution?
The solution is a homogenous type of mixture of two or more substances
What is the meaning of the concentration of solution?
The concentration of solution is how much solute is present in a known volume of solution
What are concentrations of solutions measured in?
Concentrations of solutions are measured in moldm-3
How do you work out the number of moles in a solution?
Number of moles in solution = concentration (moldm-3) x volume (dm3) ÷ 1000
Convert dm3 to cm3
1dm3 = 1000cm3
Answer this question: 1.17g of sodium chloride was dissolved in water to make 500cm3 of solution. What is the concentration of solution in moldm-3
Concentration of solution (moldm-3) = number of moles ÷ volume (dm3)
number of moles = mass ÷ mass of one mole
1.17 ÷ (23 + 35.5) NaCl = 0.02
concentration = 0.02 ÷ (500 ÷ 1000)
concentration = 0.04 moldm-3
How do you convert moldm-3 to gdm-3?
moldm-3 x Mr = gdm-3
gdm-3 divided by Mr = moldm-3
