Moles and Equations Flashcards
Amount of a substance
The quantity whose unit is the mole. Chemists use ‘amount of substance’ as a means of counting atoms
Mole
The unit for amount of substance. The amount of any substance containing as many particles as there are carbon atoms in exactly 12g of the carbon-12 isotope
Avogadro constant, N(A)
The number of particles per mole (6.02x10^23)
Molar mass
The mass per mole of a substance. The units are g mol^-1
Empirical formula
The simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element present in a compound
Molecular formula
The actual number of atoms of each element in a molecule
Stoichiometry
The molar relationship between the relative quantities of substances taking part in a reaction
