Acids Flashcards
Acid
A species that is a proton donor, and releases a H+ ion in aqueous solution
Hydrochloric, sulfuric and nitric acid formula
HCl, H2SO4, HNO3
Common bases
Metal oxides, metal hydroxides, ammonia.
Base
A species that is a proton acceptor. E.g. OH- + H+ -> H2O or NH3 + H+ -> NH4+
Alkali
A soluble base, releasing OH- ions in aqueous solution
Soduim hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, aqueous ammonia formula
NaOH; KOH; NH3
Salt
Any chemical compound formed from an acid when a H+ ion from the acid has been replaced by a metal ion or another positive ion, e.g. NH4+
Acid + carbonate
Salt + carbon dioxide + water
Acid + base
Salt + water
Acid + alkali
Salt + water
Anhydrous
A substance that contains no water of crystallisation - no water
Hydrated
A crystalline compound containing water molecules
Water of crystallisation
Water molecules that form an essential part of the crystalline structure of a compound
