molecules in cells Flashcards

1
Q

cytosol: aqueous gel surrounding membrane-bound organelles
macromolecules: loots of polymers joined together. mainly formed by condensation reactions (- H20)

A

examples of polymers:
∙sugars- polysaccharides
∙proteins- amino acids

Q

3 types of polymers:
STRUCTURAL- produce fibres of different lengths (e.g. chitin, cellulose)

STORAGE- energy building blocks, can be reversed to release energy (starch, glycogen)

FUNCTIONAL- information can be encoded (DNA)

A

molecules in cells can be divided into polar and non-polar

POLAR- soluble in water (hydrophilic)

NON POLAR- not soluble in water e.g. oils (hydrophobic)

WATER- largest component of a cell by mass
can act as an acid or base as it can give and receive protons
