Molecules Flashcards
What are four physical properties of water?
Buoyancy, Viscosity, Thermal conductivity, and Specific heat capacity.
What is Buoyancy?
Buoyant force is an upwards force exerted on an object placed in the medium. This force equals the weight of the water displaced by the object.
What is Viscosity?
Viscosity is water’s resistance to a substance moving through it, air is less dense meaning it has less viscosity.
What is Thermal conductivity?
Thermal conductivity is the ability to transfer heat, water has high conductivity and air has low.
What is Specific heat capacity?
Specific heat capacity is water’s ability to absorb and give off heat without changing temperature. Air will easily change temperature due to its low heat capacity.
What is the common theory for the origin of water?
Asteroids brought hydrated minerals to the Earth’s crust and gravity kept the water on the surface.
What is “heavy water”?
“Heavy water” is water molecules with hydrogen atoms that have more neutrons than normal which is Deuterium.
