Molecular Structure Flashcards
Why do atoms bond?
To stabilise, atoms want to obtain the lowest potential energy to be have the octet structure.
What is a covalent bond and how is it characterised?
When two non-metals bond together a covalent bond is formed. This bond is characterised by electrons involved in the bond being shared between the atoms involved.
What is electronegativity?
It is the force of attraction for a bonding pair
What is an ionic bond and how is it characterised?
An ionic bond is when a non-metal and a metal bond. This is characterised by the electrons from the metal being transferred to the non-metal and this creates a positive and negative ion which then electrostatic ally attract to one another.
What is a metallic bond and what is it characterised by?
A bond between two metals and it is characterised by the positive atomic core surrounded by the sea of delocalised electrons.
Linear
Only two atoms involved..
1 bonding pair of electrons HCl
2 or 4 bonding pairs… No lone pairs CO2
Angular
2 bonding pairs and 2 lone pairs for H2O
Trigonal planar
BF3 it is a flat molecule. No lone pairs
Pyramidal
NH3… 1 lone pair.
Tetrahedral
No lone pairs. 4 bonding pairs… Remember! VSPERT*
Why is polarity important
Polarity depends on the intermolecular forces…
