Molecular Shapes Flashcards
What is the difference between bonding pairs and non-bonding pairs.
Bonding pairs are shared between two atoms to make up the covalent bond. Non bonding pairs are lone pairs on the atom.
How to determine the shape of a molecule?
- Count the number of bonding and non-bonding pairs
2. Match it to the molecular shape
How is the molecular shape formed?
The shape is due to repulsion of the negative charges around the central atom.
What are the bonding and non-bonding pairs sometimes referred to?
Areas/regions of electron density. This tells us there are seperate areas where electrons lie.
What molecular shape does 2 areas of electron density form?
Linear molecular shape.
What is the exception to the linear molecular shape?
There may be more than 2 areas of electron density as each atom needs a full valence shell.
Which molecular shape has 3 areas involving: 3 bonding pairs and 0 non bonding pairs.
And what is it’s bond angle?
Trigonal planar, 120
What molecular shape has 3 areas of electron density including: 2 bonding pairs and 1 lone pairs. And what is it’s bonding angle?
Bent, <120
What is the molecular shape that has 4 areas of electron density including: 4 bonding pairs & 0 non-bonding pairs.
And what is it’s bonding angle?
Tetrahedral, 109.5
What is the molecular shape that has 4 regions of electron density that includes: 3 bonding pairs and 1 non-bonding pair. And what is it’s bonding angle?
Trigonal pyramidal, <109.5
What is the molecular shape that has 4 regions of electron density including: 2 bonding and 2 non-bonding pairs.
And what is it’s bonding angle?
Bent, <109.5
What is the molecular shape that has 5 areas of electron density including: 5 bonding pairs and 0 non-bonding pairs.
And what is it’s bonding angle?
Trigonal Bipyramid, 120 between the different planes & 90 between the same planes.
What is the molecular shape that has 5 areas of electron density including: 4 bonding pairs and 1 non-bonding pair. And what is it’s bonding angles.

T-Shape, 90 between different planes and 180 between same planes.
What is the molecular shape that has 5 regions of electron density including: 2 bonding pairs and 3 non-bonding pairs. And what are their bonding angles?
Linear, 180
