Molecular elements and compounds. (2.2) Flashcards
What is a molecular element?
A pure substance composed of 2+ atoms of the same element
–> ieL diatomic elements, ozone, phosphorus (p4), sulfur (s8)
What are all the diatomic elements?
HOFBRINCL
H- Hydrogen (h2)
O- Oxygen (h2)
F- Fluorine (f2)
Br- Bromine (Br)
I - Iodine (I2)
N- Nitrogen (N2)
Cl- Chlorine
Bromine = liquid
What is molecular compound?
A pure substance made of molecules that are made up of two or more non-metallic elements.
What is Covalent bond?
The attractive force/bond resulting from 2 atoms sharing an electron pair
What is bonding electrons?
An electron in the valence shell of an atom that is unpaired (it is avaliable to form a covalent bond with another antom)
What is bonding capacity?
The # of bonding electrongs that effect # of bonds it can form.
What are the properties of molecular substances (5)?
1) exisits as gas, liquid and solid at room temp
2) Have a varity of textures (waxy, hard, brittle)
3) Low melting points and boiling points (Due to weak forces, small amounts of energy to seperate the molecules)
4) Many do not dissolve in water (YET small molecules and polar bonds tend to dissolve)
5) Usually are NOT electrolyes and cannot conduct electrcitity (With the exception of GRAPHITE)
Exceptions:
Octect rule: Boron, Nitrogen & Phosphorus have different # than 8 vakebce electrons (Can have more or less)
Graphite conducts electrcity.
