Molecular crystals Flashcards
Molecular crystals
consist of molecules held in a regular array lattice structure by intermolecular forces.
Covalent bonds within molecules hold atoms together not between molecules
Molecular crystals have a lower melting point
As intermolecular forces between molecules are weak
Iodine a molecular crystal is held with van der waals forces which are much weaker making iodine have the properties
Crystals are soft and break easily
do not conduct electricity as no charged particles
DO covalent bonds ever conduct electricity
it doesnt
HOWEVER IN AQUEOUS MAY REACT
Some simple covalent compounds do conduct electricity in solution, but this is a reaction with the water than produces ions such as HCl which forms H+ and Cl- ions
Are molecular substances soluble in water
Most compounds are insoluble with water
Unless they are polar and can form hydrogen bonds (such as sucrose)
