Energy changes Flashcards
How does a solid turn to liquid
You have to supply more energy to weaken the forces that act between particles this energy is called latent heat of melting or enthalpy change of melting
When solid is melting why doesn’t the temp
the heat energy is absorbed as the forces between particles are weakened
What is enthalpy
is the heat energy change measured under constant pressure
whilst temp depends on the average kinetic energy and therefore relative to speed
What happens when heating a liquid
supply energy to the particles they ove quicker and they have more kinetic energy
the particles get further apart
thats why liquids expand when heated
energy to needed to turn a liquid to a gas is called
latent heat of vaporisation or enthalpy change of vaporisation no temp change in boiling
