Molecular Basis Of Inheritance Flashcards
What experiment did Henry and chase conduct?
They tagged bacteriophages with radioactive isotopes of phosphorous and sulfur. Proteins contains sulfur but not phosphorus and DNA contains phosphorus but not sulfur. When a virus phage was injected into a bacterium, the phosphorous tagged DNA went into the bacterium while the sulfur remained outside. The numerous progeny produced were a result of DNA from the viral nucleus not the protein from the viral coat.
What did Rosalind Franklin do?
She conducted X-ray crystallography to show DNA shaped as a helix.
What did Watson and Crick do?
The proposed the double helix structure by using biochemical analysis of Erwin chergaff who discovered the nucleotide bases and the X-ray diffraction of Franklin.
What did Meselson and Stahl discover?
They discovered that DNA replicates in a semi conservative manner by using heavy and light nitrogen and by noticing that in the first generation the DNA produced was a density in the middle of the heavy and light.
What happens to mRNA before it leaves the nucleus?
A modified guanine nucleotide is added to the 5’ end of the mRNA to help the ribosome bind to it. A polypeptide A chain is added to the 3’ end to protect it from hydrologic enzymes and to ease its exit from the nucleus. Noncoding regions called introns are removed by snRNPs. Then only exams are left that leave the nucleus.
Who published the findings that the transforming agent in griffiths experiment was DNA?
Avery,Macleod, and mcarty
