Mole Concept Flashcards
What is an atomic mass unit
It is defined as 1/12 the mass of on atom of carbon -12
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms of the same element having same number of protons but different number of neutrons.
Why was carbon - 12 chosen as the standard?
- It is a stable solid at room temperature making it suitable for storage and transportation
- It is the readily available and suitable for calibrating the mass spectrometer
What is relative isotopic mass?
Mass of one atom of an isotope of an element compared to 1/12 the mass of one 12C atom
What is relative atomic mass?
Average mass of one atoms of an element compared to1/12 the mass of one 12C atom
What is relative molecular mass?
It is the average mass of one molecule of an element or compound compared to 1/12 the mass of one 12C atom
What is relative formula mass
It is the average mass of one formula unit of an ionic compound compared to 1/12 the mass of one 12C atom
What is the empirical formula?
It is the simplest formula that shows the ratio of atom of each element present in the compound.
What is the molecular formula?
It gives the actual number of atoms of each element present in one molecule of the compound
