Halogen Derivatives Flashcards

1
Q

Why do halogenoalkanes have a higher boiling point than alkanes with a similar Mr?

A
  • Halogenoalkanes are POLAR molecules with PD-PD
  • Alkanes are non-polar with weak ID-ID interactions

Q

Why is the final product for a Sn1 reaction a racemic mixture?

A

-The intermediate carbocation is planar with respect to the electron deficient carbon atom.
- Since the carbocation is TRIGONAL PLANAR with respect to the electron deficient carbon, the nucleophile is able to attack from THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE PLANE OF THE CARBOCATION WITH EQUAL PROBABILITY.
- If the substitution of the nucleophile results in a chiral product, a RACEMIC MIXTURE is formed
