Mole Concept Flashcards
What is the Avogadro Constant?
It is the exact number of carbon atoms in 12.0g of carbon-12.
Define the mole.
It is the amount of substance which contains the same number of particles as carbon atoms in 12.0g of carbon-12.
What are isotopes?
Atoms of the same element having same number of protons but different number of neutrons.
What is relative isotopic mass?
It is mass of one atom of an isotope of an element on a scale on which one atom of 12C isotope of carbon has a mass of 12 units.
State what is meant by empirical formula.
It is the simplest formula that shows the relative number of atoms of each element present in a molecule of a compound.
State what is meant by molecular formula.
It gives the actual number of atoms of each element in a molecule of the compound.
How is relative molecular mass, Mr, understood?
It is the average mass of one molecule of an element or compound on a scale on which one atom of the 12C isotope of carbon has a mass of 12 units.
Why carbon-12 was chosen as the standard?
It is a readily available common element, exisiting as a stable solid at room temperature making it suitable for storage and transportation.
It is the most abundant isotope of carbon.
State what is Molar Mass, Mr.
It is the mass of one mole of the substance.
What is relative formula mass?
It is average mass of one formula unit of an ionic compound on a scale on which one atom of the 12C isotope of carbon has a mass of 12 units.
What do you understand by the term relative atomic mass, Ar?
It is the average mass of one atom of an element on a scale on which one atom of 12C isotope of carbon has a mass of 12 units.
