Chemical Equilibrium Flashcards
What are irreversible reactions?
Reactions that take place in one direction.
State Le Chatelier’s Principle.
If a system at dynamic equilibrium is subjected to a change which disturbs the equilibrium, the system will respond in a way so as to counteract the effect of change to re-establish equilibrium.
What do you know by reversible reactions?
Reactions that can go in both directions due to smaller difference in activation energies of forward and backward reactions.
What do you understand by the term ‘dynamic equilibrium’?
When reversible reaction reaches a state of dynamic equilibrium, reaction continues to occur but rates of forward and backward reactions are constant such that there is no net change in concentrations of the reactants and products.
What is the degree of dissociation, α?
It is the fraction of reactants that has undergone dissociation.
What is defined by equilibrium constant, Kc?
It is the ratio of the product of concentrations of products raised to the appropriate powers to the product of the concentrations of reactants raised to the appropriate powers at equilibrium at a given temperature.
Under what **condition **can equilibrium be achieved?
In a closed system where there is no gain or loss of matter to or from the surroundings.
What does equilibrium constant Kc measure?
The extent to which a reversible reaction takes place.
