Q

Usually molar crowns taper from in which direction? What is the exception, if any?

A

Taper from buccal to lingual (narrower)
Taper from mesial to distal (narrower)
Taper also occurs in height (mesial half is taller than distal half)

Exception: Some maxillary first molar that have large distonlingual cusps where crowns taper to the buccal - therefore the mesiodistal dimension is greater on the lingual than on the buccal

Q

Which crowns are wider mesiodistally than faciolingually? What shape does this result for the outline of the crown?

16
Q

Why is there more tapering from the distal proximal contact ot the cervical line on first molars than on second molars?

A

Due to presence of the distal cusp

17
Q

Which maxillary molar has a smaller distolingual cusp?

A

Maxillary second molar

18
Q

Which maxillary molar is most likely to have a fifth cusp.

A

First molars - cusp of carabelli

19
Q

Which maxillary molar has its roots more spread apart?

A

Maxillary first molars

20
Q

What is the outline shape of maxillary molars?

A

Parallelogram

21
Q

For mandibular first molars, what is the mean root trunk length on the buccal and on the lingual aspect?

A

Buccal aspect 3mm

Lingual aspect 4 mm

22
Q

For maxillary first molars, what is the mean root trunk length on the buccal, mesial and distal aspect?

A

buccal aspect 3-4mm

mesial aspect 4-5mm

distal aspect 5-6mm
