Molars Flashcards
Molar crowns are wider in which direction?
Wider mesiodistally than cervico-oclussaly
Usually molar crowns taper from in which direction? What is the exception, if any?
Taper from buccal to lingual (narrower)
Taper from mesial to distal (narrower)
Taper also occurs in height (mesial half is taller than distal half)
Exception: Some maxillary first molar that have large distonlingual cusps where crowns taper to the buccal - therefore the mesiodistal dimension is greater on the lingual than on the buccal
Where are the buccal crests of curvature of crowns located?
Cervical 1/3
Where are lingual crests of curvature of crowns located?
Middle 1/3
Where are mesial proximal contactcs located on molars?
Junction of occlusal and middle thirds
Where are distal proximal contacts located on molars?
In the middle third
Which cusps are longer when mandibular molars are oreinted on a vertical axis?
Lingual cusps (especially mesiolingual cusp) is longer than buccal cusp
Which crowns are wider mesiodistally than faciolingually? What shape does this result for the outline of the crown?
Mandibular crowns
Resulting in a rectangular or pentagon outline
Which molar crowns tilt lingually at the cervix?
Mandibular molar crown
how many roots do mandibular molars have?
2 roots
Larger mesial and a smaller distal root
How many roots do maxillary molars have?
3 roots
Longest lingual root
Mesiobuccal root
Shortest distobuccal root
Which molars have oblique ridges that run diagonally and which two cups do they join?
Maxillary molars have oblique ridges that run diagonally connecting mesiolingual to the distobuccal cusp.
How many cusps does the mandibular second molar have? What is the pattern of occlusal grooves versus first molars?
mandibular second molars - 4 cusps MB, DB, ML, DL
Cross occlusal pattern
Which molars has roots are more divergent and widely separated?
First mandibular molar
Which molars has roots that are more parallel and closer together?
Second mandibular molars
