Molarity Flashcards
Define solute.
A solute is a substance dissolved in a solvent to make a solution.
What are electrolytes?
Electrolytes are ions dissolved in a solution and do not freely pass through cell membranes.
What solution is the optimum for cells?
An isotonic solution is the optimum for cells.
In cell biology, we want to study cells in isotonic solutions.
What is molecular mass?
Molecular mass is the sum of atoms that make up that molecule CH4 has 1 carbon (12 amu) and 4 hydrogen (1 amu)
Where is atomic mass located?
The bottom number
What is the molecular mass of methane (CH4)
Carbon has an atomic mass of 12 and hydrogen has an atomic mass of 1.
Thus the molecular mass of methane is 12+1+1+1+1 = 16
Molecular mass = 16.
What is the molecular mass of ethanol (C2H6O)?
= 46
What is the molecular mass of glucose (C6H12O6 )?
= 180
Define what a mole is in chemistry.
Moles in chemistry is another word for an amount. It is a number, a constant which refers to the number 6.02214 x10 to the power of 23
What number will a mole always be?
A mole will always equal 6.02214 x10 to the power of 23
What does the 23 mean in 6.02214 x10 to the power of 23
The 23 in the number is called an exponent and is the short hand for decimal places.
What does 1 mole of an element weigh the equivalent of?
A mole of an element weighs the equivalent of that elements atomic mass in grams (g)
Define molarity
Molarity refers to a known amount of a molecule or compound in a known volume of solvent.
What does a 1 molar solution refer to?
A 1 molar solution (or 1M) of a particular compound refers to 1 mole of that compound dissolved in sufficient solvent to make a 1 litre solution.
What is the formula for moles?
number of moles (mol)= mass of compound (g) / relative molecular mass of compound or molar mass (g/mol).
