insertion: angle of mandible
nerve: trigeminal nerve (V3) - mandibular branch
closes (elevates) jaw
medial/interior pterygoid
origin: medial surface of lateral pterygoid plate
insertion: medial aspect of angle of mandible
nerve: trigeminal nerve (V3) - mandibular branch
closes (elevates) jaw
temporalis
origin: temporal fossa of temporalis and sphenoid
insertion: coranoid process of mandible
nerve: trigeminal nerve (V3) - mandibular branch
anterior fibers close (elevates jaw); medial and lateral fibers retract mandible (opens jaw)
lateral/exterior pterygoid
origin: greater wing of sphenoid (superior head); lateral pterygoid plate (lateral head)
insertion: joint capsule of condylar process
nerve: trigeminal nerve (V3) - mandibular process
protrusion of jaw (only muscle of masticators to protrude the jaw)
