Module One Flashcards
On a more specific level, what is NLP the study of?
How people organise themselves internally
What does Neuro refer to in the aspects of internal organisation?
How the nervous system and it’s complex web of thoughts, feelings and physical sensations or actions influence your behaviour.
What does Linguistic refer to in the aspects of internal organisation?
Signals both verbal and non-verbal and how you communicate with yourself and others
What does Programming refer to in the aspects of internal organisation?
Both repetitive and predictable ways in which you think, feel and behave.
What is the definition of Neuro
The nervous system, the mind and the sensory organs with which we receive and filter information through our five senses.
What is the definition of Linguistic?
The way we communicate and interpret experiences through language, including body language, images, sounds, feelings, tastes and smells as well as words.
What is the definition of Programming?
The way we construct personal ‘programs’ (similar in some ways to computer programs) of thought, communication and behaviour.
What are the five filters of the NLP communication model?
- Meta Programs
- Belief Systems
- Values
- Decisions
- Memories
What are Meta Programs Filters?
The way someone handles information.
(Knowing someone’s Meta programs can help you clearly and closely predict people’s states and therefore predict their actions and behaviours. Meta programs are neither bad or good - they are just the way someone handles information).
What are beliefs filters?
Generalisations about how the world is / Assumptions that we have about the way the world is that either create or deny personal power to us.
(Our beliefs are like our on/off switch. IN the process of working with someone’s beliefs, it’s important to discover what beliefs they have that may cause them to do what they do. We also want to find out if someone has disabling beliefs or beliefs that do not allow them to do what they want to do.
What are Values filters?
Essentially act as an evaluation filter.
(Values determine whether our actions are good or bad, right or wrong and how we feel about our actions.Values are arranged in a kind of hierarchy, with the most important one typically being at the top and lesser ones below that).
(Each of us has a different NLP communication model or internal model of the world. Our values are the result of our model of the world. When we communicate with ourselves or others, and our model of the world conflicts with our values or someone else’s values, then there is going to be conflict).
(Values are typically what people move toward or away from. They are basically our attractions or repulsion’s in life. They are our deep, unconscious belief systems about what’s important, and our values can change with context too. E.g you have certain values about what you want in a relationship and what you want in business. What you want in one and the other may be quite different - if they’re not, it’s possible that you may have trouble with both. Since values are context related, and they may also be state related).
What are decisions filters?
Decisions we have made in the past
(Decisions may create new beliefs or hey may just affect our perceptions through time. The problem with many decisions is that they were either made unconsciously or at a very early age and are forgotten. However, the effect is still there).
What is the Memories filter?
Our memories.
(A number of psychologists say that the present plays a very small part in our behaviour. Some psychologists believe as we get older, our reactions in the present are more and more just reactions to gestalts or collections of memories that are organised in a certain way of past memories).
What will the Five Filters of the NLP Model determine?
How we process the information from the outside world.
(The five filters will determine how we represent an event that is occurring now. It is our internal representation that puts us in a certain state and these internal representations create a certain physiology. The state in which we find ourselves will determine our behaviour and the NLP communication model will then determine how we process all of the information from the outside world.
What happens during this process is that we make an internal I/R representation of that event. The I/R of the event then combines with a physiology to create a state. The word ‘sate’ refers to the internal emotional state of the individual - happy, sad, motivated etc).
Internal Representation + Physiology = State > Behaviour > How we Process info from outside world
What are the Five Principles to Achieving Success?
- Know what you want
- Do something about it
- Notice what happens (have sensory acuity)
- Be Flexible
- Work from a psychology and physiology of excellence
Know what you want: Know what you want, why you want it and make sure your desired outcome is ‘ecological’ - good for you and the people you care about (and for your community and the planet) in the widest possible sense. People are not often sure what they want. The best ways to discover this are to find what is already working well in the area that you want to change and to elicit your values for that context).
Do something about it: Take action to to make your outcome happen. Nothing is going to happen if you don’t do anything. The results you get whatever they are will provide you with useful additional information to learn from.
Notice what happens: Notice the results you get from your actions. Are they taking you closer or further away from your goal? Consider the knock-on and delayed effects as well as the obvious, immediate ones.
Be flexible: If what you have been doing isn’t working, do something else (behavioural flexibility). If you don’t know what else do, do anything else and go on changing your behaviour until you find what works.
Work form a psychology and and physiology of excellence: Mind and body are one system. Your breathing, posture and general physical state affects your thoughts and emotions. Get yourself in the best possible state - physically, emotionally, mentally - and then take action.
