Module One Flashcards
Prototcol
A defined set of standards that computers must follow in order to communicate properly
Computer Networking
The name we’ve given to the full scope of how computers communicate with each other
Physical Layer
First layer. Represents the physical devices that interconnect computers
Data Link Layer
Second layer. Responsible for defining a common way of interpreting these signals so network devices can communicate
Ethernet Standards
Define a protocol responsible for getting data to nodes on the same network or link
Network Layer
Third Layer. Allows different networks to communicate with each other through devices known as routers.
Internetwork
A collection of networks interconnected through routers, the most famous of these being the internet
IP
Internet Protocol. Heart of the internet and most smaller networks around the world. Common protocol used on the Network Layer
Transport Layer
Fourth Layer. Sorts out which client and server programs are supposed to get that data
Application Layer
Fifth Layer. Deals with individual applications
Crosstalk
When an electrical pulse on one wire is accidently
Crimper
A hand-held tool that looks like pliers. Used to squeeze down or crimp wires
Cable Stripper
A hand-held device that also looks like pliers. Used to strip protective coating from cables.
Wi-Fi Analyzer
A scanner that analyzes the power and quality of the Wi-Fi in an area. It also collects data about the Wi-Fi and its circumstances
Toner Probe
A toner probe is a part of a set of devices that are used for finding ethernet and other internet connectors. One device plugs into a cable, while the other device, the tone probe, uses a tone that grows louder as it gets closer to the device plugged into the cable.
