Module Four Flashcards
the teeth in the back of the mouth; molars and premolars
posterior
dentition is divided into 4 quadrants; upper right, upper left, lower right, and lower left
quadrants
a plane that divides the body into equal right and left halves; the middle of the mouth, it divides the right side of the mouth from the left side of the mouth
midline
the area between two teeth
interproximal
a pointed or rounded eminence on the surface of a tooth
cusp
these teeth are used for cutting, they are at the front of the mouth; there are two central incisors and two lateral incisors on each arch
incisor
the tooth closest to the midline, one in each quadrant
central incisor
the second teeth from the midline, one in each quadrant
lateral incisor
the third teeth from the midline; this tooth is used for tearing; often called a cuspid because it only has one cusp; the longest tooth in the mouth; the cornerstone of the mouth
canine
also know as a bicuspid because it has two cusps; it sits between the canine and the first molar; used for chewing, grasping, and tearing, there are two premolars in each quadrant-the first premolar is next to the canine and the second premolar is next to the first premolar; premolars are only in permanent dentition, they replace the deciduous (baby) molars
premolar
