Module 9- Neutron Density Flashcards
Sandstone with gas
Low GR Low Neuton (low HI=gas)
Sandstone with oil
Low GR
High Neutron (High HI=oil)
High density
Sandstone with water
Sandstone with low porosity
Increased density
Shale
High GR
High Neutron
Neutron log responds to?
H in water and hydrocarbons
What is the Neutron log the best for detecting?
gas-bearing strata
What does a neutron log read in a gas zone?
anomonously low porosity
NPHI in shale?
high across shales
NPHI in a limestone scale?
actual porosity in limes
NPHI in a sandstone?
reads different porosity than the actual
Oil, gas and water HI values?
oil- high
water- high
gas- low
What is the shale effect?
An increase in neutron porosity due to the presence of clay (causes error in readings= high HI)
How does the neutron tool work?
Bombards the formation with high energy neutrons and measures the hydrogen content of the formation as the neutrons collide with the nuclei of the formation’s atoms
A lot of H atoms =?
Increased gamma radiation
Compensated neutron logs (CNL) determine?
porosity by assuming the that the reservoir pore spaces are filled with either water or oil and then measure the amount of hydrogen atoms in the pores.
