Module 9: Food Security Flashcards
Food Security exists when…?
all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.”
Since 2015, the United Nations’ sustainable development goals (SDGs) call for…?
“major transformations in agriculture and food systems in order to end hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition by 2030”
the CSFS (Centre for studies in food security) stresses four conditions for food security. What are they?
availability, accessibility, adequacy, and acceptability – plus a fifth condition: agency
What does availability entail?
Sufficient food for all people at all times.
Is enough food produced? Available? (quantity)
What does accessibility entail?
Physical and economic access to food for all at all times.
Is food physically and economically accessible?
What does adequacy entail?
Access to food that is nutritious and safe, and produced in environmentally sustainable ways. Is food safe? Healthy? Environmentally sustainable? Nutritious? Adequate for specific needs? (quality)
What does acceptability entail?
Access to culturally acceptable food, which is produced and obtained in ways that do not compromise people’s dignity, self-respect, or human rights.
Is food culturally edible and accessed through dignified ways?
What does agency entail?
policies and processes that enable achievement of food security.
How can food security be achieved, guaranteed, sustained?
How is hunger different from food insecurity?
Hunger is defined as “the uneasy or painful sensation caused by a lack of food … the recurrent and involuntary lack of access to food”
while undernourishment is the result of extreme food insecurity
How is hunger measured?
prevalence of undernourishment % or PoU
What explains the growth in world hunger since 2014?
increasing number of conflicts, climate hazards, economic slowdowns that challenge accessibility of food by the poor
What are the undernourishment trends by world regions? (FAO)
Asia- 8.3% (declining)
Africa- 19.1% (increasing)
Latin America/Caribbean- 7.4% (increasing)
What is the world total for number of people who are food insecure?
about 2 billion (2019)
Why is food insecurity a complex issue?
can lead to hunger/undernutrition but also to overnutrition/overweight/obesity
