Module 9 Flashcards
Kidneys
Two bean shaped organs that remove waist products from the blood
Ureters
Long tubes back past urine from the kidneys to the bladder
Bladder
A reservoir for urine
Urethra
A tube like structure that passages urine from the bladder to the side of the body
Suprarenal and adrenal glands
Sit on top of the kidney, but they are not part of the urinary system. They furnished epinephrine and hormones to the body.
Micturation
Urination or the act-of voiding
Voiding
To expel urine
Nitrogenous wastes
Substances containing nitrogen and are excreted in urine
Reabsorpion
Process of accepting again or taking back
Renal artery
The structure that carries blood to the kidney and the renal vein is the structure that carries blood away from the kidney
Renal pyramid, minor calyx, major calyx and renal pelvis
Internal structures of the kidney
Nephron
The microscopic component of the kidney
Calic/o
Calyces
Cyst/o
Urinary bladder
Nephr/o
Refer to the kidney
Pyle/o
Refers to the renal pelvis of the kidney, which is an internal structure
Urethro
Refers to urethra
Urin/o
Urine
-uria
Urination
Nephrolithiasis
Refers to a condition of kidney stones or renal calculi
Pyelonephritis
Inflammation of the renal pelvis
Renal cell carcinoma
Cancerous tumor of the kidney
Renal failure
Failure of the kidney to excrete urine
Renal hypertension
High blood pressure resulting from kidney disease
Wilms tumor
Malignant tumor of the kidney occurring in childhood
Blood urea nitrogen or
BUN
Amount of urea in the body
Creatinine clearance test
Measures the ability of the kidney to remove creatinine (a break down product from muscle) from the blood
Renal angiogram
Radiologic exam where contrast mania is injected into the arteries of the kidney
KUB
Type of x-ray exam where a single image visualizes for kidneys, ureters and bladder
Excretory urography exam or intravenous pyelogram (IVP)
Radiological examination where contrast media is injected into a vein and the urinary system is demonstrated
Cystourethrogram
Is also a radiological study where contrast media is placed in the urinary bladder, and the patient voids in order to demonstrate the urethra
Retrograde pyelogram
A radiological study work contrast media is introduced directly into the bladder and ureters through her cystoscope
Cystoscope
A visual examination of the urinary bladder by means cystoscope
Lithotripsy
The crushing of stones with shockwaves that can be performed on the kidneys
Dialysis
When waste materials are separated from the bloodstream when the kidneys can no longer function
Renal transplant
When a kidney is transplanted into a patient with renal failure from an identical twin (isograft) or other individual (allograft)
