Module 8 Flashcards
Fracture
Sudden breaking of a bone due to trauma, stress or pathology
Simple fracture
Bone is broken, but there is no open wound on the skin
Compound fracture
Bone is broken with an open wound in the skin
Comminuted fracture
Bone is splintered or crushed
Compression fracture
Bone is compressed and this often occurs with vertebrae
Ewings sarcoma
Malignant bone tumor and it occurs at an early age
Osteomyelitis
An inflammation of the bone and bone marrow and it is caused by bacterial infection
Osteomalcia
Softening of the bone that is caused by inadequate amounts of mineral or calcium in the bone
Osteoporosis
Decrease in bone density, which results in a thinning and weakening of the bone
Arthr/o
Joint
As in arthritis, which means inflammation of a joint
Articulation
Joint
And to articulate means the joining or meeting of
Ligament
Connective tissue binding bones to other bones. Ligaments support, and strengthen the joint.
Synovial

Tendon
Connective tissue that bind muscles to bones
Chondr/o
Cartlidge
Rheumat/o
Watery flow as in rheumatoid arthritis, which denotes a collection of fluid and joint spaces
Serum calcium
The measurement of the amount of calcium in blood
Serum phosphorus
The measurement of the amount of phosphorus in a sample of serum
Arthrocentesis
The surgical puncture of the joint space with the needle.Synovial fluid is removed for analysis
Arthrography
An x-ray examination of a joint after contrast media has been injected into the joint
Arthroscopy
A visual examination of the inside of a joint with an endoscope
A bone scan
Nuclear medicine study where a radioactive phosphate substance is injected intravenously, and the substance is absorbed by bone, which is scanned for tumors, infection, and inflammation
Electromyography
An examination where the strength of muscle contractions, as a result of electrical stimulation is measured
