Catheter
Tube inserted into the bladder to drain urine
In dwelling Catheter
Also Foley or retention catheter. Remains in the bladder. Closed system, only opened to drain bag. Used often with surgeries
Straight catheter
Used to obtain sterile urine specimen and w/ some medical conditions (MS). Also called in and out catheterization
Risk of infection
Higher in women than in males. Urethra 1.5-3 inches in female vs 6-7 inches in male
Suprapubic catheter
Inserted surgically through abdominal wall directly into bladder. More commonly used with males
Condom catheter
External catheter used with males. Also called Texas catheter
Gauge of catheter determined by
Size of lumen
Single lumen
Straight catheter
Double lumen
Indwelling catheter; one for draining urine, 1 for catheter balloon
“Fr”
French scale for catheter size; higher the gauge, larger the catheter
Child catheter sizes
6-, 8-, and 10-gauge
Female adult cath sizes
14- or 16- gauge
Adult male catheter sizes
14-, 16-, or 18- gauges
Catheterization
Requires physician’s order
Catheterization in health care facility
Sterile procedure; clean procedure if done at home
