Module 8: The Muscular System Flashcards
Skeletal Muscle Tissue
Striated and multinucleate.
Cardiac Muscle
Found only in the walls of the heart - it is striated and uninucleate.
Smooth Muscle
Found mainly in the walls of hollow organs other than the heart – non-striated and uninucleate.
Sarcomere
A single contractile unit of a muscle fibre.
Myosin
Thick filaments.
Actin
Thin Filaments.
Sarcoplasmic Reticulum
Endoplasmic reticulum of muscle cells.
Neurotransmitter
Molecule which transmits a signal from a neuron to the cell it is signaling, such as acetylcholine.
Refractory Period
The time during repolarization when the muscle fibre cannot be stimulated again.
Muscle Tone
Skeletal and smooth muscle remain in a state of continual, partial contraction.
Isotonic
Muscle contraction where the muscle changes length and movement occurs.
Isometric
Muscle contraction where the muscle does not change length and no movement occurs.
Aerobic Respiration
ATP regeneration pathway that requires oxygen.
Anaerobic Respiration
ATP regeneration pathway that does not require oxygen.
Origin
Point of attachment of a muscle to a stationary bone.
