Define Power
the capacity that A has to influence the behavior of B so that B acts in accordance with A’s wishes
Power implies two facets, what are they?
- its potential need not be actualized to be effective
2. it requires a dependency relationship
How do Power and Leadership differ in Goal compatibility?
Power only needs dependence while Leadership requires goal congruence
How do Power and Leadership differ in Direction of Influence
Power is concerned with influence in all direction while Leadership focuses on downward influence
How do Power and Leadership differ in Research Emphasis
Power focuses on tactics used by individuals and groups (is broader topic) while Leadership emphasizes leadership style

Formal Power and Personal Power
What is Formal Power based on and three types of Formal Power
Based on an individuals formal position in an org
There is legitimate power, reward power and coercive power
What is Personal Power based on and two types of Personal Power
Based on an individual’s unique characteristics
There is referent power and expert power
Explain one of the three types of Formal Power
Legitimate power = power derived from a person’s position/job in org
Reward power = derived from ability to provide positive outcomes and prevent neg outcomes
Coercive Power = derived from use of punishment and threat
Explain one of the two types of Personal Power
Referent Power = derived from being well liked by others - stems from identification w/ powerholder/charismatic leaders)
Expert power = derived from having special info/expertise that is valued by org
