Q

What are the organizational steps that must be taken when implementing AI?

A
  • Determine the purpose for implementing AI.
  • Establish risk assessment policies to evaluate how AI will affect existing processes and procedures.
  • Work with legal and technology teams to:
    • Review limitations of the specific forms of AI.
    • Understand legal implications and stay apprised of the changing legal landscape.
    • Develop additional programs to mitigate risks introduced by AI.
  • Training to ensure employees understand the purpose, limitations, and security and privacy controls for AI systems. In the case of generative AI systems, training is important to ensure employees do not provide sensitive, personal or classified information to an AI program without awareness and required approval.

Q

When should an AI process be bypassed or replaced with an alternative?

A
  • When legally mandated. For example, U.S. Customs and Border Protection processing for identity verification is required to offer an alternative to facial recognition. This may include the ability to show a passport or other documentation to a human agent.
