prejudice
biased feeling or belief about a group of people or things
scapegoat theory
believes that prejudice is a way for people to blame others for their problems
conflict theory
believes that in order for people to keep their power and status, they will justify the behaviors that keep certain groups below them
culture / cultural transmission theory
believes that prejudice is learned through culture
social identity theory
believes that prejudice is an attempt to enhance self-esteem in their group in particular
in-group vs out-group
in: a group that a person belongs to
out: a group that a person does not belong to
internal attributions
reasons based on internal skills or personality traits
external attributions
reasons based on things outside of your control
self-serving attributions
gives failure external attributions and success internal attributions (basically favoring your attributions)
stereotype threat
fear that you’ll conform to a negative stereotype that is associated with a group in which you belong to
controlled information processing
taking information, consciously thinking about it, and then processing it
contact hypothesis
bringing members from different groups together in hopes to reduce prejudice experienced between them
when contact works:
- mutual interdependence
- common goal
- change for informal interactions between members
- multiple contacts with members of the opposing group
- social norms that support equality between the groups
when does failure of contact occur
when the contact hypothesis creates more prejudice rather than reducing it
realistic conflict theory
when resources are scare, people will be more prejudiced
