algebraic expression
an expression that contains at least one variable
base
when a number is raised to a power; the number that is used as a factor is the base
coefficient
the number that is multiplied by the variable in an algebraic expression
constant
a number whose value does not change
equivalent expressions
expressions that have the same value for all values of the variables
evaluate
to find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression
exponent
the number that indicates how many times the base is used as a factor
like terms
terms with the same varaibles raised to the same exponents
numerical expression
an expression that contains only numbers and operations
term
the parts of an expression that are added or subtracted
variable
a letter or symbol used to represent a quantity that can change
Distributive Property
the property that states if you multiply a sum by a number, you will get the same result if you multiply each addend by that number and then add the products
order of operations
a rule for evaluating expressions; PEMDAS
perimeter
the distance around a polygon
Associative Property of Addition
the property that states that for three or more numbers, their sum is always the same, regardless of their grouping
