Module 8 Flashcards
Urban
A population center (POP CTR) with a population of 1,000+ and a population density of 400+ persons per square km.
Do disparities exist in physical activity among people who live in urban vs rural areas in Canada?
Yes, similar to other social determinants inequities of opportunities to be active contribute to rural vs urban differences in pa.
Separated Land Use
specific areas are zoned for only housing or business (not good for pa because people have to drive everywhere
Lower residential densities:
Number of people living in a certain area ( lower equals more single family homes)
Socio Ecological Factors to PA ( enviornment)
Social Environment- seeing others active
Built Environment- public transport
Natural Environment- national parks
Environmental Characteristics Significant to PA in Urban Areas
walk-ability, bike-ability, traffic speed and volume, mixed land use, residential density, recreation facilities, urban green space, multi use paths, connectivity, multi-modal urban trips,
Two types of recommended interventions to improve walking and biking in urban centers:
1- Transportation system interventions
Street connectivity, complete streets, bike boulevards.
Sidewalk, multiuse path, and trail infrastructure.
Bicycle infrastructure, bike share programs.
Public transit infrastructure and multi modal connectivity.
2- Land Use and Environmental Design Interventions
Mixed land use environments to increase the diversity and proximity of local destinations.
Access to parks and other public or private recreational facilities.
Transit-oriented development.
Active Living
a way of life in which PA valued and integrated into daily living.
