Discrimination
unfair treatment of a person or group on the basis of prejudice.
Prejudice
à unjustified incorrect attitude toward members of some social group based solely on their membership in that social group
Discrimination
Discrimination is a socially structured and sanctioned phenomenon, justified by the dominant ideology.
Dominant ideology
a set of common values, beliefs, or ideas shared by most people in a given society.
Norm
rule that is socially enforced and sanctioned and involves an expected standard of thinking, feeling and behaving established by a dominant group.
Sanction
violations of norms are considered deviant and are stigmatized (shamed or disgraced)
De Jure
mandated by law and policy
Racial minorities were not allowed to play ball in the early 1900
De Facto
without legal basis but sanctioned and evidenced by custom or practice
Ex Post Facto
discrimination happen and then after the event has occured
Overt
obvious and blatant to see it
Covert
subtle
ex- prize money in tennis women and men had different money outcomes
Interpersonal
direct and between individuals
Institutional
biases and oppression structured in institutions
ex- education or media

align with society’s expectations vary by society
