Module 7: Respiratory system Flashcards
Two functional components of the respiratory system
Conducting system (responsible for supplying and cleaning the air) Respiratory portion (where exchange of gases occurs)
Another name for “respiratory epithelium”
Simple columnar ciliated epithelium
Conducting portion of the respiratory system
Nasal cavities, nasopharynx, larynx ,trachea, bronchi and bronchioles
Respiratory portion of the respiratory system
Portion of the respiratory system where gaseous exchange occurs
Consists of respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, alveolar sacs and alveoli
Histological difference between bronchi and bronchioles
Bronchi are typically greater than 1mm in diameter, bronchioles are smaller. Bronchi have a large amount of elastin in the lamina propria and have cartilage plates/islands around them. Bronchioles have a continuous layer of smooth muscle around them.
Type I alveolar cells
Simple squamous epithelium
Provide the site for gas exchange between the capillaries and the alveoli
Type II alveolar cells
Produce surfactant, a compound that prevents the alveoli from collapsing
Main tissue components of the alveolar wall
Surface epithelium, blood vessels, connective tissue
