Module 7: Continuous Random Variables & Continuous Probability Distributions - Part 1 Flashcards
Continuous random variables
Weight, height, temperature, time
Exponential distribution
Used to predict the waiting time between successive events in a poisson process
Random variables
A variable that takes its value according to a chance process (an experiment)
Discrete random variable
Has countably many outcomes
Continuous random variable
Has uncountably many outcomes
Continuous uniform distribution
Used when we want an equal amount of probabilities for X taking on values in equal-length intervals = X~Unif (a,b)
Poisson distribution (discrete)
Used to count the number of times an event occurs, independently of other times the event occurs, in a fixed interval of time and/or space
The exponential distribution
The waiting time between events
