Module 7 - Clinical Considerations In Pharmacology: Diabetes Flashcards
What is a normal glucose levels in a fasting state?
3.5-5.0 mmol/L
What is a normal glucose level in a fed state?
4.0-7.0 mmol/L
When is the onset of Type 1 diabetes?
Early - Child and adolescents
When is the onset of type 2 diabetes?
Gradual - >35 years
What is the treatment of type 1 diabetes?
Insulin
What is the treatment of type 2 diabetes?
Diet, exercise and oral hypoglycaemic agents (metformin)
Describe the mechanism of action of metformin
Reduces production of glucose in the liver and increases glucose uptake in skeletal muscle
What is the adverse effect of metformin?
Lactic acidosis
Describe the mechanism of action of sulphonylureas
Increases secretion of insulin in pancreas
Provide an example of a sulphonylureas
Gliclazide and glibenclamide
Describe the mechanism of action of insulin
Removes glucose from the blood and moves it into cells to be used as energy
What is hypoglycaemia?
Low blood sugar
What is the treatment of hypoglycaemia?
Oral administration of glucose or subcutaneous/IM injection of glucagon
When is glucagon used?
Severe hypoglycaemia when individuals cannot eat or drink
Provide examples of drugs which can cause hyperglycaemia
Antipsychotics, glucagon, glucocorticosteroids, thiazide diuretic and social drugs (amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana)
