Module 6:Organic Synthesis - C-C Bond Formation (6.2.4) Flashcards
1
Q
Formation of Nitriles from Haloalkanes
A
- React haloalkane with NaCN or KCN in ethanol.
- Increases C chain length.
- Nucleophilic substitution.
- Halogen more electronegative than C.
- :C≡N- nucleophile attacks carbon as its slightly positively charged. (𝛿+)
- Halogen becomes 𝛿− and breaks off by heterolytic fission.
- C≡N substitutes halogen, halide a by product.
2
Q
Formation of Nitriles from Aldehydes/Ketones
A
3
Q
Reduction of Nitriles
A
- Reduced to amines by Hydrogen and a Ni catalyst.
- EXAMPLE: CH₃CH₂C≡N + 2H₂ ——-> CH₃CH₂NH₂
- Propanenitrile to Propylamine.
- Ni catalyst over the arrow.
4
Q
Hydrolysis of Nitriles
A
- Undergo hydrolysis to form carboxylic acids.
- CH₃CH₂CH₂C≡N + 2H₂O +HCl ——-> CH₃CH₂CH₂COOH + NH₄Cl
- Butane nitrile to butanoic acid.
