Name 8 rules of stress patterns in English.

  • Suffixes are not stressed.
  • Prefixes are not stressed.
  • For noun & verb words, stress is on 1st syllable for nouns and 2nd syllable for verbs.
  • Most 2-syllable verbs has stress on the last syllable.
  • Most 2-syllable nouns have stress on the 1st syllable.
  • Compound nouns have the stress on the 1st syllable.
  • Compound adjectives has a stress on the 2nd syllable.

A

Visually: on the board using color, underlining, capital letters, big and small dots.

Orally: provide clear examples, drill the word.

Other alternatives: use fingers to stress syllables, use non-linguistic ways, group words with the same stress patterns together, use realia.
