What are stress patterns?
A
Where we place emphasis on certain syllables in a word.
Words have only one main stress which is always on the vowel in English.

A
- Working out word stress rules from examples.
- Categorizing words according to their stress pattern.
- Using example sentences with words that can be a noun or a verb.
- Eliciting and marking the stress on the board and encouraging learners to do the same in their notes.

- Suffixes are not stressed.
- Prefixes are not stressed.
- For noun & verb words, stress is on 1st syllable for nouns and 2nd syllable for verbs.
- Most 2-syllable verbs has stress on the last syllable.
- Most 2-syllable nouns have stress on the 1st syllable.
- Compound nouns have the stress on the 1st syllable.
- Compound adjectives has a stress on the 2nd syllable.

Name 3 ways with examples.

Visually: on the board using color, underlining, capital letters, big and small dots.
Orally: provide clear examples, drill the word.
Other alternatives: use fingers to stress syllables, use non-linguistic ways, group words with the same stress patterns together, use realia.
