Q

What are the four main criteria when choosing network media?

A

amount of data
- the amount of data, and speed, the data must be transmitted
cost
- the cost of the media and installation
distance
- the maximum distance that the media can carry a signal
environment
- the environment the media will be installed

Q

What are two internal physical characteristics that describe an Ethernet cable?

A
  • they’re made up of eight twisted copper wires (to reduce crosstalk and EMI (electromagnetic interference!))
  • the copper wires are in four pairs and are colour-coded

Some other things:
- they can be grey, blue or black.
- they will always have RJ45 connectors with a cable clip.
- they have double the amount of wires as a phone cable (8 vs 4).
- they can be flat or round.
- they can be cut to whatever length you need.
